Luminous Laos

Feb 13-17, 2027
A Lao cooking class in Vientiane, a sunrise balloon over Vang Vieng’s karsts, and a rice farming morning outside Luang Prabang — five days, capital to royal city, over Valentine’s Week.

Land on the 13th. By the time the balloon lifts over Vang Vieng two mornings later, Valentine’s Day will already be behind you — spent watching light hit a limestone karst instead of a fixed-menu dinner.

This is Alaya’s very first departure, and it runs the length of the country’s most-loved stretch: the capital, Vientiane, the karst country around Vang Vieng, and the old royal city of Luang Prabang. Three things anchor it — a home-cooked meal in a Vientiane kitchen, a hot air balloon over Vang Vieng’s limestone karsts, and a morning working a rice paddy outside Luang Prabang. Five days, four nights, capped at 10 travelers, led in person by both of us.

Day by day

Day 1

Vientiane

Arrive and settle in, then spend the afternoon in a Lao home kitchen learning to cook a full meal from scratch before dinner. Golden hour at Patuxai Monument, then Pha That Luang as the light drops.

Day 2

Vang Vieng

A scenic drive north by van. The rest of the day belongs to the karsts: the climb to Nam Xay viewpoint, the three tiers of Blue Lagoon 3, a walk through Tham Chang cave, and a stop in a Hmong village on the way back.

Valentine’s Day — spent thigh-deep in blue water and inside a cave, not at a table for two.

Day 3

Vang Vieng

Up before sunrise for a hot air balloon lift-off over the limestone karsts. The rest of the day is unscheduled.

Balloon ride is an optional add-on, booked locally — see “Getting ready” below.

Day 4

Luang Prabang

Train north through the mountains. Kuang Si Waterfalls in the afternoon, then Pak Ou caves and a slow Mekong cruise as evening comes on.

Day 5

Luang Prabang

A morning working a rice paddy at a community farm outside town — real fieldwork, not a photo op — bookended by Sai Bat, the pre-dawn alms-giving procession, and a full lunch at the farm before departing.
